Podiatrists are physicians, surgeons and specialists who dedicate their lives to improving foot and ankle healthcare. They are surgically trained physicians who complete three year hospital residencies and demonstrate extensive knowledge of lower extremity anatomy.  Today’s practice environment has led to a steep decline in insurance reimbursements in many areas of elective foot and ankle surgery. This fact has encouraged podiatrists to search elsewhere for revenue enhancers . Dermatology is a natural fit for podiatry as many patients seek out  expertise in skin and nail health each and every day. Onychomycosis, the world’s #1 skin disease, impacts every podiatrist’s professional outreach as we strive to offer treatment solutions for our patients.  Early podiatry also known as “chiropody” has involved the study of skin and nails and its roots are deep in our profession’s history.  The ability to provide pain relief and return patients to a better quality of life begins with an understanding of dermatology.
